Next-Gen Kia Sonet Expected to Launch in 2027

Kia India is working on the second-generation Kia Sonet, which is expected to launch in 2027. First introduced in September 2020, the Sonet quickly became one of the popular compact SUVs in India. It also received a facelift in early 2024, but the upcoming model is likely to bring more noticeable changes.

The new Kia Sonet will move to the updated K1 platform, replacing the current K2 base. This platform is already seen on models like the Kia Syros and supports a more advanced electrical and electronics setup. This means features like over-the-air (OTA) updates and remote diagnostics could be available, making the SUV more modern and easier to maintain.

One of the concerns with the current Sonet has been limited rear seat space. Kia is expected to address this in the next-gen model, possibly by increasing the wheelbase or improving cabin layout. This should make the rear seats more comfortable, especially for long journeys.

In terms of engine options, the familiar lineup is likely to continue. This includes a 1.2-litre petrol, a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol, and a 1.5-litre diesel engine. Transmission options will also remain similar, giving buyers multiple choices based on their needs. However, a strong hybrid version of the Sonet is also under development. This hybrid model is not expected at launch but could arrive later, around 2028 or 2029.

On the features side, Kia may upgrade the SUV with larger screens. The current 10.25-inch touchscreen and digital instrument cluster could be replaced by bigger 12.3-inch units. The new Sonet is also expected to get Level 2 ADAS, using both camera and radar-based systems. This would be a step up from the current Level 1 system.

Safety is another area where improvements are expected. With the K1 platform using more high-strength materials, the new Sonet could aim for a higher safety rating in Bharat NCAP tests.

Once launched, the next-gen Sonet will continue to compete with rivals like the Tata Nexon, Maruti Brezza and Mahindra XUV 3XO.
