Tata Retains #2 Spot in Car Sales, Continues to Lead EV Segment in India
Tata Motors has once again secured the second position in overall car sales in India, staying ahead of rivals like Mahindra & Mahindra and Hyundai Motor India. At the same time, Tata continues to dominate the electric vehicle (EV) segment, strengthening its position as India’s top EV brand.
In April 2026, Tata Motors recorded sales of 57,472 units. This was slightly lower than its March figure of 67,162 units, but still enough to stay ahead of Mahindra, which sold 54,897 units, and Hyundai, which posted 47,345 units. Despite this strong performance, Maruti Suzuki remains the clear market leader, selling over 1.58 lakh units in April.
A key highlight for Tata is its strong presence in the EV market. The company sold 8,507 electric cars in April 2026, maintaining a clear lead over competitors. Mahindra followed with 5,394 EV units, while MG Motor India sold 4,978 units during the same period.
One of the reasons behind Tata’s consistent performance is its wide product portfolio. Models like the Tata Nexon, Tata Harrier, and Tata Safari cater to different segments, offering a balance of features, pricing, and build quality.
Tata has also focused heavily on safety and value for money, which has helped it connect well with Indian buyers. Over the years, the brand has played a key role in increasing awareness around safety ratings and build quality in the market.
With a strong lineup in both internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles and EVs, Tata Motors continues to hold its ground in a highly competitive market.
