Tata Motors Sales Decline in January 2025, PV Sales Down 11%, CV Sales Stable
Tata Motors’ total sales in both domestic and global markets for January 2025 amounted to 80,304 units, showing a decline from 86,125 units sold in January 2024. The company experienced an 11% year-over-year (YoY) decrease in passenger vehicle (PV) sales, which stood at 43,316 units, while commercial vehicle (CV) sales remained largely unchanged.

In the domestic market, Tata Motors sold 78,159 units in January 2025, which marked a 7% YoY decline compared to the 84,276 units sold in the same month last year, reflecting a drop of 6,117 units. Total PV sales, which includes Tata’s electric vehicles, reached 48,076 units in the domestic market, down 10% from 53,633 units in January 2024.
Exports saw an even sharper drop, with only 240 units shipped in January 2025, a 40% decline from the 400 units exported in January 2024. This took the combined domestic and export PV sales to 48,316 units, down by 11% from 54,033 units sold in January 2024. Despite Tata Motors having the largest number of electric vehicles in its portfolio compared to other OEMs, its EV sales (domestic and exports combined) fell by 25%, from 6,979 units in January 2024 to 5,240 units in January 2025.
Tata Motors CV Sales in January 2025
Tata Motors’ commercial vehicle division saw a more positive start to 2025. Sales for heavy commercial vehicles (HCV) increased by 1% to 8,990 units, up from 8,906 units in January 2024. The segment for intermediate and light commercial vehicles (ILMCV) saw a larger increase of 12%, with 5,298 units sold compared to 4,743 units last year. Passenger carrier sales also grew by 18%, reaching 4,582 units.
However, small commercial vehicles (SCV) such as cargo and pickup trucks faced a 15% decline in sales, with 11,213 units sold, down from 13,122 units in January 2024. This led to a 2% overall drop in total CV domestic sales, which stood at 30,083 units compared to 30,643 units in January 2024.
Electric CV Sales
Tata’s electric CV lineup saw growth in exports, which increased by 31% to 1,905 units, compared to 1,449 units shipped in January 2024. However, the total sales in the CV segment remained flat, with 31,988 units sold in January 2025, compared to 32,092 units in January 2024—just a slight difference of 104 units.

Tata Motors had a major presence at the 2025 Auto Expo, showcasing several new vehicles in its electric vehicle portfolio. Among the highlights were the Harrier EV, Sierra EV, and the Tata Avinya X Concept, along with green fuel technologies and limited edition versions of its ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) SUVs.
In summary, while Tata Motors experienced a decline in its overall PV sales and faced a drop in exports, its CV segment showed resilience with positive growth in certain categories. The company continues to strengthen its presence in the electric vehicle market, with new models and technologies on the horizon.
