Skoda and Volkswagen Recall Multiple Models Again Over Seatbelt Safety Issue

Skoda, Volkswagen Issue Another Recall in India Over Rear Seatbelt Defect

Second seatbelt-related recall in two months affects 1,821 units of Slavia, Kushaq, Kylaq, Virtus, and Taigun

Skoda Auto Volkswagen India Pvt. Ltd. (SAVWIPL) has announced its second rear seatbelt recall in less than two months, raising fresh concerns about automotive safety standards in India. This time, the recall affects 1,821 units of popular models like the Skoda Slavia, Kushaq, Kylaq and Volkswagen Virtus and Taigun, all manufactured between December 2021 and May 2025.

The repeated issue with rear seatbelt assembly puts the spotlight on component quality and production consistency in some of Skoda and VW’s best-selling vehicles in the Indian market.

🔧 What’s the Issue with Rear Seatbelts?

According to documents submitted to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), affected vehicles may have a structural crack in the metal base of the rear seatbelt frame (left and right side). Additionally, incorrect components may have been used during production, increasing the risk of seatbelt failure during an accident.

If the seatbelt fails to restrain passengers properly, it can lead to serious injury or fatality, especially for rear-seat occupants—an area of growing concern in Indian road safety discourse.

🚗 Affected Skoda and Volkswagen Models

The recall covers locally produced units only, with the following breakdown:

  • 860 units of the Skoda Slavia, Kushaq, and Kylaq
  • 961 units of the Volkswagen Taigun and Virtus

Note: Imported models such as the Volkswagen Tiguan, Tiguan R-Line, and Golf GTI are not impacted by this recall.

⚠️ Second Recall for the Same Problem in 2025

This is not the first time SAVWIPL has recalled vehicles for a seatbelt issue this year. In May 2025, the company recalled over 47,000 units of the same models due to a similar defect in the rear seatbelt mechanism.

While the initial recall was viewed as a proactive quality measure, this second occurrence indicates potential systemic issues in quality control or supplier oversight—a worrying sign for customers and industry watchdogs alike.

🔍 What Should Vehicle Owners Do Now?

Affected customers can take the following steps:

  1. Check recall status on the official Skoda India or Volkswagen India websites by entering their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).
  2. If their vehicle is part of the recall, they’ll be contacted directly by the company.
  3. Owners will receive free inspection and replacement of the rear seatbelt assembly at authorized service centers.

🚦 Why Rear Seatbelt Safety Matters in India

In recent years, rear-seat safety in India has gained increased attention, especially after multiple high-profile road fatalities involving unbelted rear passengers. A cracked or defective seatbelt frame can render safety systems ineffective, directly impacting the survival chances of passengers in a crash.

What’s more alarming is that this issue affects recently manufactured vehicles—as new as May 2025—which calls into question the ongoing quality assurance processes within Skoda and Volkswagen’s production lines.

📉 Impact on Brand Trust and Market Growth

While automotive recalls are common, repeated recalls for the same critical safety component can severely impact consumer trust. For Skoda and Volkswagen India, both of whom are working aggressively to grow their market share in the competitive Indian automotive space, such lapses could affect long-term brand reputation and customer loyalty.
