Volkswagen Teases New Entry-Level EV – India Launch on the Horizon?
Volkswagen, as part of its growth strategy, is preparing to launch multiple new models globally, including an entry-level electric vehicle (EV) to replace the discontinued VW Up hatchback. Teased recently, this affordable EV, possibly named ID.1 or ID.One, will be based on the MEB platform and could hit the markets by 2027.
Design and Features
The first teaser highlights a sleek design with unique lighting elements. The front fascia features a distinctive headlamp setup with rectangular lighting signatures, framed by LED elements on each side. The bumper integrates vertically stacked LED DRLs, and the illuminated Volkswagen logo adds a modern touch. The EV’s curvy body panels and flowing lines not only enhance aesthetics but also improve aerodynamics. The muscular fenders and flat bonnet lend the vehicle a clean and rugged appearance. Compact rear-view mirrors, likely with integrated turn signals, further contribute to the streamlined design.
Though the teaser keeps many details under wraps, we can expect body-colored door handles, side molding, and sporty alloy wheels in the side profile, with a lighting signature at the rear similar to the front.
Volkswagen’s Small Electric Car – ID. 2all Concept for Reference
The new entry-level EV will join Volkswagen’s successful ID family, which has sold over 1.35 million vehicles since 2019. The car will be based on a shortened version of the MEB platform used by the ID.2all hatchback. Designed for affordability, it will feature a compact battery pack and a single motor setup. The platform and powertrain are likely to be shared with sister brands Skoda and SEAT to achieve economies of scale.
Volkswagen plans a starting price of around €20,000 (roughly Rs. 18 lakh), targeting a wide user base in Europe. Production plans are still being finalized, but Volkswagen has indicated that its Wolfsburg plant will play a key role in manufacturing the new EV, along with other electric models like the next-generation electric Golf and the high-volume electric T-Roc.
India Launch Prospects
While an official launch timeline for India remains uncertain, Volkswagen is actively working on EVs for the Indian market. The company is developing the India Main Platform (IMP) for electric vehicles, a derivative of the CMP platform used in China. Future EV launches in India are expected to include compact and midsize electric SUVs, but the entry-level EV may be introduced at a later stage.
Volkswagen’s entry-level EV shows promise for global markets, with India possibly benefiting from the brand’s growing electric vehicle offerings in the near future.
